For the last thirty-five years, I renovated old houses as a side income. I have bought and sold a lot of properties over that time and dealt with more than a few realtors.Long ago the greatest value of a relator to me was their in-depth knowledge of neighborhoods and areas in their market. This more than anything else justified their commission. Many years ago the game changed. Agents aren’t allowed to “steer” clients anymore… value lost.The other thing that made real estate agents invaluable years ago was that they were the MLS gatekeepers. Without a realtor, there was no way to get access to all of the properties for sale in a given area. Now, with sites like realtor.com, the house-hunting aspect of the process can be handled without an agent… more value lost.So then, with those two things off the table, what makes a real estate agent worth the commission they charge?Here are the things I look for:AVAILABILITY: Realty isn’t a 9 to 5 job. But while realtors can’t be expected to work all of the time, they should be available to a client under contract at any time (within reason).PERFORMANCE: Lots of little things can and will go wrong in any real estate transaction. A good realtor stays on top of the deal and is as proactive as possible in attending to the details. When things go sideways —and they often will— the best realtors I have used never get caught flat-footed. They know what to expect and they solve problems (or at least, correctly diagnose problems) quickly.AUTHENTIC FRIENDLINESS: Most real estate transactions take a long time from start to finish. It can be a stressful process for the client even when everything goes right (and everything never goes right). I am still amazed at the number of realtors that I have dealt with who just weren’t able to maintain a pleasant and friendly demeanor throughout the process.This time around, my family dealt with Lisa Terrell from Ekdahl Real Estate. This was a contingency transaction involving two properties in different states so most of our dealings with Lisa took place long distance. This sort of transaction almost guarantees issues of all sorts and we had our share. When a few things went sideways, she acted quickly to resolve the issues and keep things moving forward and on time. In each case, she kept us in the loop and informed. When we needed extra logistical support at the new house and in town before we moved, she went above and beyond what she was required to do as a realtor to help us out.From start to finish, Lisa was very professional and, at the same time, genuinely friendly and easy to deal with.

Our family had the pleasure of working with Ekdahl Real Estate, Chris Hart and John Ekdahl. They were very knowledgeable about farm and ranch real estate and did an outstanding job for us! You could not ask for better people to work with! I highly recommend them!

Ive known John for many years. And when it came time to sell, I called to pick his brain on what to do. John offered several options to help me even if it meant I sold out right and didnt use his company. I chose to let him and his company list my place. He sent Paige out and within about 3 months my place sold for more than I was expecting.So naturally when I decided to buy, I called Paige and John. Paige was never too busy to help, several times driving from Abilene to San Angelo to show me a house. I finally found a place that checked all the boxes and Paige again, went out of her way to help.Well, today, 09/07/23 we closed on our new home! Im thankful for John sending Paige out to help me and thankful for Paige for taking her career personally and making sure my daughter and I found the perfect home for us.I know and can promise, these two people will help you in any way they can, even if they dont make the sale. They do this because they live to help. In my opinion, they earn every cent they make. Paige made this whole process fun. I dont know how, but she did.And if I ever lose my mind and decide to sell or buy again, Im definitely calling these two again.Good luck on your search. If you want your property sold you should consider Sonny and John @ Ekdahl Nelson. They have the experience to tackle issues creatively and get the transaction closed. Highly Recommended!
